Adrenalectomy - Removal of the Adrenal Glands
The commonest reason for removal of the adrenal gland is an over-production of hormones, which can dangerously raise the blood pressure, followed by cancer.
The adrenal glands lie high in the abdomen, above each kidney and near the diaphragm and as a result can only be reached by traditional surgery through a large incision. The laparoscopic operation is performed through 4 x 5-12 mm cuts near the rib cage.
The results of over 600 cases of laparoscopic adrenalectomy have been published to date and it is now widely accepted as the 'gold standard'.
